What is SEO for AI called?

Camello team ·

Three names for one job. The industry says answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO); the public mostly says "AI SEO", which Google Trends shows searched far more often than either in the US. All three mean making your business easy for AI answer engines, like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, to find, check and name. We call it showing up in AI answers.

Google's guide: AI features and your website

What do AEO and GEO stand for?

The first name, answer engine optimization (AEO), comes from answer engines: tools that reply to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Mode are answer engines, and before them the featured snippets and voice assistants were too. Optimization is the old word for making your pages easier for such a tool to read and quote.

The second, generative engine optimization (GEO), is named for how the same tools work: they write a new answer from what they have read, rather than copying a snippet from one page. When we asked ChatGPT about the term on 2026-10-17, it pointed to the 2023 research paper that formalized it.

Outside answer engine optimization, the letters AEO also name a customs status in international trade (Authorized Economic Operator). And a Google search for "GEO tool", the kind made for AI answers, also turns up maps software: on 2026-10-17 its People Also Ask box asked about geographic information system tools. That is one more reason we keep the acronyms out of our headings where we can.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO earns a link in a list of results. Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization (AEO and GEO) earn a mention inside a written answer. The work underneath is mostly the same.

We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Mode the question in this heading, word for word, on 2026-10-17. All five drew roughly the lines below, and Perplexity added that there is no universally agreed distinction between the last two.

The table is a simplification. On a small-business site the same changes serve all of them: a page that says plainly what you do and where, the same name, address and phone everywhere, reviews, and real answers to the questions customers ask. Google's own guidance for its AI features, linked under the answer above, says the usual SEO basics apply and no special markup is needed.

Why are there three names for one job?

Because the industry needed a name for a new kind of result and picked two, and the public picked a third. On Google Trends, over the twelve months to 2026-10-17 in the US, "AI SEO" averaged 59 on Trends' relative scale, "generative engine optimization" 11 and "answer engine optimization" 7.

So the people selling the work say answer engine optimization or generative engine optimization (AEO, GEO), and the people buying it say "AI SEO", or simply ask how to show up in ChatGPT. Google's People Also Ask boxes show the confusion: on the searches we ran on 2026-10-17, the questions included what AI SEO is called now, and whether it is the same thing under each of the industry's names. It is.

Is AEO real, or SEO with a new name?

Both. The result is new and real: when someone asks an AI answer engine for a plumber in Franklin, the reply names a few businesses, and you are in that sentence or you are not. The work behind it is mostly old: clear pages, consistent facts, reviews, real answers. On 2026-10-17 all five engines we asked told us the same site basics now feed both the rankings and the AI answers.

What is genuinely different is measurement. Google gives you a position and a click count. An AI answer gives you neither. You have to ask the question, several times, and count who is named, because the answer changes from one asking to the next. That counting is most of what the tools in this field sell.

Will AEO or GEO replace SEO?

No. The engines we asked describe the AI work as a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement: AI answers mostly draw on pages that search engines already trust. A site that Google cannot read, or does not rank, is rarely the one an AI answer quotes.

Our longer answer, with what we do not know, is in Is SEO dead now that there is AI?

What does an AEO or GEO tool do, and do you need one?

It asks the AI answer engines your customers' questions, records whether you or a competitor is named, and reports it over time. Most tools stop there: they report and leave the changes to you. Asked on 2026-10-17, the engines put monitoring tools for a small business at about $20 to $100 a month, and most said a small business does not need a paid one to start.

You can do the counting yourself for free:

  1. Open a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
  2. Ask the question a customer would ask, in their words, a few times each.
  3. Write down who each one names, and the date.
  4. Do it again next month, with the same questions.

Why does Camello say "showing up in AI answers"?

Because that is what owners ask for, and it needs no glossary. On this site the plain words come first and an acronym follows in brackets, once.

Camello does the work this page describes, for US small businesses on WordPress. It checks where you show up on Google and in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, through their official interfaces, which is why we say "AI answer engines" and never "what ChatGPT shows you". Then it proposes the fixes, writes each one into your site when you click Apply, and checks a month later whether it worked. Nothing is guaranteed, and "no effect" is a normal answer.

Questions people ask about the names

What is AI SEO called now?

The industry calls it answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). The public still says AI SEO. All three name the same work: making your business easy for AI answer engines to find, check and name.

Is there an equivalent of SEO for AI?

Yes, and it is mostly SEO. It goes by AEO, GEO or AI SEO, and it rests on the same basics: a readable site, consistent facts, reviews and real answers. What is added is checking whether the AI answers name you.

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimization: making your pages easy to quote for a tool that answers in sentences, like ChatGPT or a voice assistant. In international trade the same letters name a customs status, which is unrelated.

What does GEO stand for?

Generative engine optimization: the same idea, named for engines that generate a new answer from what they read. A search for "GEO tool" also turns up maps software, which is a different GEO.

Is AEO different from SEO?

In the result, yes: SEO earns a link in a list, AEO earns a mention in the answer itself. In the work, mostly no. The same clear pages and consistent facts serve both.

How does GEO actually work?

An AI engine answers a question by reading pages, often found through a search engine, and writing a new answer from them. GEO means making your pages the clear, consistent, checkable source it reads and names. There is no form to fill in and no paid placement.

What is the difference between answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization?

Mostly the name. AEO came first, from featured snippets and voice answers; GEO came with the tools that write new answers. Perplexity told us on 2026-10-17 that there is no universally agreed distinction between them.

Is AI SEO called GEO?

Often, yes. AI SEO is the public's phrase and GEO is one of the industry's two. Both mean showing up in AI answers.

Is GEO better than SEO?

Neither is better, because one builds on the other. AI answers draw mostly on pages search engines already trust, so a business that skips SEO to do GEO usually gets neither.

Can GEO replace SEO?

No. None of the five engines we asked on 2026-10-17 said it would; they described it as an addition. Google still carries most searches.

Is AEO real?

The result it chases is real: AI answers name some businesses and not others, and that can be counted. The name is marketing. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a mention, because nobody controls what an engine writes.
