How we measure
Camello measures the same things every month, the same way each time: where your pages rank on Google and Bing for a fixed list of searches, how many real clicks those pages got from Google, and whether the AI answer engines name your business when asked your customers' questions. Every number on your dashboard says what it is, the window it covers and the date it was taken.
What we read, and how often. Twelve sources, and nothing else. This is what the engine reads today, not what it might read later.
- Your Google Search Console. Clicks, impressions and which of your pages Google has indexed, read-only, if you connect it. Read every day.
- Your Bing Webmaster Tools. The searches that found you on Bing, crawl problems and the sites that link to you, read-only, if you connect it. Read every week.
- Google results for your searches. Where your pages rank in Google's top 10 for each tracked search, looked up as a customer in your area would. Read every week (once a month on Free).
- Bing results for your searches. Where your pages rank in Bing's top 50 for the same searches. Read every week (once a month on Free).
- What ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overview answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini through their official interfaces, the AI Overview as Google shows it: whether the answer names you, a competitor or neither, and the page it cites. Read every month; Gemini and the AI Overview also every week (once a month on Free).
- How many people search each one. Searches a month in your country for each phrase, from Google's Keyword Planner, or from DataForSEO when Google gives only a range. Read when you set up your account, and again on a re-run or when you first connect Search Console.
- Your site's own pages. Titles, descriptions, headings, text, structured data, robots.txt and llms.txt, read the way a visitor's browser would. Read at sign-up and before each month's proposals.
- Your competitors' pages. The sites Google and the AI engines show instead of you, compared every week (every month on Free). On Starter and Pro, what the top pages for your searches and questions say, read once a month.
- Your business listings. Whether Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, the BBB and the directories for your trade list your business, with the right name, address and phone. Read every month.
- Who links to your competitors. The sites that link to your competitors but not to you, from DataForSEO's index of links. Read every month on Starter and Pro.
- Page speed. Google's PageSpeed reading of your home page and up to three more pages, on phone and desktop, and whether Google's Knowledge Graph knows your business. Read every week.
- Your site's visitors, through the plugin. Page views and clicks on your own site, in the consent mode you chose, with no vendor pixel. Read as they happen.
Google rankings. For each tracked search we look up Google the way a customer in your area would, and record the position of your site, or "Not in the top 10", and the page that ranked. The result page and the dashboard show the location and device of the lookup. Up to five searches on Free (checked once a month), forty on Starter, eighty on Pro, chosen from your site and your interview; you can retire any of them with one click.
Real clicks. If you connect Search Console, we read your clicks and impressions from Google, per page and per search, read-only. We show them as Google reports them, over the last 28 days. Without the connection, rankings are still measured and clicks are not shown.
Bing. We look up the same searches on Bing and record your position in its top 50. If you connect Bing Webmaster Tools, we also read the searches that found you on Bing, crawl problems and the sites that link to you, read-only.
AI answers. We ask three AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) the questions you track, chosen from your site and your interview (up to three on Free), through each engine's official interface, and record whether the answer named you, named a competitor the engine itself returned, or neither, and the page it cited. On Free each question is asked once; on Starter twice; on Pro three times, because AI answers vary from one asking to the next and more askings give a steadier reading. If an engine did not search for a question, we show "did not search", not a zero. We say "AI answer engines" rather than "what ChatGPT shows you" because the official interface and the chat app you use can answer differently. Every week we also read Google's AI Overview and Gemini's answer for each question (once a month on Free).
How many people search. When you set up your account, we read how many people search each phrase a month in your country, from Google's Keyword Planner. When Google gives only a range, we use DataForSEO's count instead. A re-run, or your first Search Console connection, can read them again.
Listings and links. Once a month we check whether Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, the BBB and the directories for your trade list your business with the right name, address and phone. For each one that is missing or wrong, we fill in the text to paste and link to the form. You send it; we never submit anything. On Starter and Pro we also list the sites that link to your competitors but not to you.
Judging a change. Each change names one measurement and one window (28, 42 or 60 days). When the window closes we compare the measurement after the change with the measurement before it and write one word: won, no effect, too early to say, or hurt. Thresholds are marked "early" until a hundred changes have been scored across all sites.
What we never do. We never estimate a number we did not measure, never show a 0 to 100 score, never compare you with sites we did not measure, and never say "typical result". If a reading looks wrong to you, every result page has a link to tell us, and we read every one.
