Is SEO dead now that there is AI?

Camello team · Published · Updated

No. Google still carries most searches. What changed is that more answers are given on the results page or by an AI engine, so fewer of them are clicked, and the same site basics now feed both the rankings and the AI answers. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Mode this question on 2026-10-17 and all five said the same.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No, and the engines that supposedly killed it say so themselves. Asked directly, all five AI answer engines told us SEO is not dead; it changed. People still search Google, Google still ranks pages, and the pages that rank are the pages the AI engines read and cite. What is different is that an answer now often arrives without a click, which means being named matters as much as being ranked.

We will not give you a percentage for how many searches still go to Google or how many clicks were lost, because we did not verify one and the numbers that circulate are mostly estimates from people selling something. If you see a page that opens with "SEO is dead" and a statistic, read who wrote it before you believe it.

The question itself is the most-asked one in this whole subject: when we pulled Google's "People also ask" boxes for 68 searches a small business owner might type, "Is SEO dead now with AI?" appeared under 12 of them, more than any other question. So you are not alone in wondering, and the plain answer is worth saying plainly.

Does SEO still matter in 2026?

Yes, for two reasons that are really one. Your customers still type into Google, and the AI engines build their answers from the same pages Google ranks. A page that is clear about what you do and where, has your name, address and phone matching everywhere, carries real answers to real questions, and has reviews behind it, does well in both places. There is no separate trick for the AI side.

Will SEO exist in 5 years?

We do not know, and neither does anyone who says they do. What we can say is what the work consists of today and that every engine we asked recommends the same work. If the name "SEO" fades, the work (say what you do, be consistent, be reviewed, answer questions, measure) will be called something else and still be the work.

Is AI replacing SEO?

AI is replacing some of the clicks, not the work. A search that used to send someone to your page can now end in an answer that names you, or names someone else, without a visit. That is a real change and it is why we measure mentions and clicks separately. But the way an engine decides whom to name is by reading pages, and the pages it reads are the ones SEO has always been about.

What is replacing SEO?

Nothing is replacing it; something is being added to it. The addition is measurement of a second surface, the AI answers, and a little extra care that your facts are stated in machine-readable form (structured data) and in plain text a model can lift. The engines call the extras a help, not a guarantee, and so do we.

Is there an equivalent of SEO for AI, and what is it called?

Yes, and it has three names, which is why people ask. The industry says "answer engine optimization" (AEO) and "generative engine optimization" (GEO); the public says "AI SEO", which is the most-searched of the three in the US by a wide margin. All three mean: make your business easy for an AI engine to find, verify and quote. We say "showing up in AI answers", because that is what the owner asks for.

The plain words first, then the acronym, every time on this site. An answer engine is an AI that answers a question in a sentence (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Mode). A generative engine is the same thing named for how it works. Optimization is the old word for making your pages easier to understand. None of it is a different job from the one in section 2. The three names side by side, with what each one means: What is SEO for AI called?

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

The basics are worth it because they are cheap and they serve both Google and the AI engines. A plain site, a complete Google Business Profile, identical name, address and phone everywhere, reviews, and real answers on the page cost an afternoon each. What is not automatically worth it is paying monthly for a report that tells you where you stand and leaves the doing to you, or paying an agency for work you cannot measure.

Our honest frame: measure first, then do only the changes you can measure, then read the result without flattering it. Camello exists to make that loop cheap for a small business, and it says "no effect" when there was none, which is a sentence most of this industry avoids. We have no customers' results to show you yet; when our own engine has run on our own site for a few months, this page will link to those numbers, including the flat ones.

Is it worth hiring an SEO agency?

If you want a person to talk to, a new site built, press, ads or the phone answered, yes, and an agency is the only thing that does those. If you want the basics done every month and measured honestly, you may not need one. We do not quote agency prices because we did not measure them.

What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

People use it to mean "a small share of the work produces most of the result", and the small share for a small business is the basics in section 5. It is a rule of thumb, not a measurement, and no two people who quote it mean the same numbers. We mention it because the question appears under seven of the 68 searches we pulled; we do not treat it as a standard.

What is the 30% rule for AI?

We could not find a standard definition. The question appears under four of the 68 searches, and the answers we saw attach it to different things: how much of a page an AI may quote, how much AI-written text a page may carry, how much of a marketing budget to spend. None is an official rule from a search engine or an AI company that we could verify. If someone quotes it to you as a rule, ask where it came from.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

It can help you write, and it can explain what to do; it cannot measure your site, change it, or tell you afterward whether the change worked. Ask it for a better page title and it will give you one. Ask it whether that title moved your clicks and it has no way to know. SEO is the measuring and the doing every month, and a chat window does neither on its own.

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

A rough one, from what you paste into it, and it will miss what it cannot see: your Google positions, your real clicks, what the other engines say about you, and whether a change is live on the page. A measurement needs a measuring tool. Camello's free check is one; the large SEO tools' free checkers are others.

A note on honesty: Camello uses AI models to write proposals and drafts, and we say so. What it does not do is let the model guess a number. Every number on your dashboard comes from Google, from Search Console, or from the engines' own answers, with its date.
